Western Carolina University?s original radio broadcast adaptation of Bram Stoker?s 1897 novel ?Dracula? will hit the Western North Carolina airwaves in a special Halloween night program on WWNC-AM/570.

The 60-minute show, originally staged in front of a live audience of nearly 1,000 people at WCU?s John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center in January, will air beginning at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The ?Dracula? cast featured students, faculty, staff and professional actors from across the university and the region. The 40-piece orchestra for the production was composed of WCU music faculty and students and string players from the Asheville Symphony Orchestra.

?Dracula? was the fourth in a series of ?academic-based entertainment? projects mounted by WCU under the leadership of director Steve Carlisle, music director Bruce Frazier, research director Brian Gastle and producer Don Connelly. Each of the shows in the series hearkens back to the golden age of radio, featuring a live orchestra and sound effects.

In 2008, the group produced ?The War of the Worlds,? and in 2009 the team put on a Veterans Day tribute titled ?On the Home Front, Nov. ?44,? which won two top honors in the Broadcast Education Association?s Festival of Media Arts. A 2010 re-creation of the 1938 Campbell?s Playhouse radio classic ?A Christmas Carol? garnered a 2011 Gabriel Award from the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals, as well as an award of excellence at the national Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts.

Brian Hall, director of programming for Clear Channel Asheville, said he is looking forward to sharing the production of ?Dracula? with listeners across the region.

?We love to support the students and faculty at Western Carolina, which has produced several key employees here at Clear Channel Asheville over the years,? said Hall. ?We have broadcasted WCU?s production of ?A Christmas Carol,? ??The War of the Worlds? and ?On the Home Front? in the past and I?ve been very impressed with the quality of the work that the university has produced. We look forward to a scary Halloween night.?

WWNC-AM is at 570 on the radio dial and also is available for streaming online at www.wwnc.com.
