VEVO For iPad Updates With New Social Features

Posted 09/07/2012 at 1:05pm | by Matt Clark

VEVO iPadThe appropriately described "Hulu for music videos" finally receives a redesign of its iPad app today. VEVO has just introduced some new features, including increased Facebook integration, iTunes compatibility, and even more ways to learn about your favorite artists.?

The uber-alliance between three of the recoding industry's biggest labels -- Sony, Universal, and EMI -- originally premiered with its website back in 2009. The service provides free viewing of over 50,000 music videos from 11,000 different recording artists.

The VEVO iOS app originally launched for iPhone in 2010, with the iPad version debuting later. Version 2.0 of VEVO HD brings over some of the UI redesign features seen on the iPhone app last spring, as well integrating more enhanced social features.

If you're interested in discovering artists similar to your usual tastes, it's now possible to search videos by genre. After you've hung the band's poster on your wall -- that still happens, right? -- VEVO HD 2.0?will let you check out that artist's bio, tour dates, and twitter feed. Building and sharing playlists with friends is now easier, thanks to simple Facebook integration.?

But the most interesting feature is iTunes video match. VEVO will cue up videos based on your iTunes music library, and with Airplay compatibility, that means it's entirely possible to sit on the couch watching videos of all your favorite artists. Kind of cool.?

So, why did the update take so long to make its way to iPad? According to VEVO's senior VP of product and technology, Michael Cerda, the company wanted to test the waters before moving forward.

"Not because we didn't want to, but because we were interested in learning how you would use the new VEVO," wrote Cerda on the VEVO blog. "Frankly, we wanted to validate our new ideas, and have an opportunity to iterate upon them to build you the best music video experience iPad can offer."

Sounds kind of weird, but hey, VEVO is free.
