I'm more excited for the season two premiere of Girls than I am about the Golden Globes, the new Anthropologie tutu skirt I just bought, and my own birthday in a week and a half, combined. And I am pretty excited for all those things.
I was a little wishy-washy after the very first episode (it seems so long ago), but by the end of the season I was fully obsessed with the show. Particularly with its alternatively hilarious and heartbreaking relationship drama. Sometimes, the scenarios made me cringe or blush in shock, but other times, the girls' experiences felt so universally, bitingly realistic for anyone who's ever experienced the dating scene in their 20s, particularly in New York. I adore the balance.
To sum up before the big premiere tonight, let's revisit a memorable relationship moment from each Girl according to the reaction it evoked;
"Been There, Done That!"
1. This look on Hannah's face after Adam said he doesn't want to be with her.
We've all been there. It was the worst, every time. Even though Hannah isn't always the most likable character, and her dating habits aren't always what I'd call relatable (attempting to sleep with her old boss "for the story", ew), her emotional reactions to her frustrating booty call relationship with Adam are something pretty much every girl I know can sympathize with.
(And speaking of Hannah's faces, the face-splitting grin in the cab after Adam finally agreed to be her boyfriend? That's exactly how we all feel after the perfect date or amazing sex. I think Rachel on Friends best explained The Grin: "You look like you slept with a hanger in your mouth.")
2. Shoshanna's Internet date.
I'm still upset we never saw how this turned out, but her announcement that she scheduled a day date at the cafe in the Old Navy flagship store (ha!) was spot on. Even though pretty much everyone is doing it these days, she still felt the need to rationalize: "I know it sounds kind of nuts, but, my nutrition teacher who's like, so cool, met her boyfriend on Match.com who's like super cute and totally perf and they're they most happy together..." This is basically a mantra I repeat to myself at least 10 times before any online date I go on.
3. Marnie's post breakup cleavage.
When Marnie finally seems to be getting her groove back, she chooses a "J. Lo at the Grammy's" dress. We've seen that move from Amy Poehler, Taylor Swift and like, every single one of you, I bet. Revenge boobs, they're a thing.
4. Speaking of breakup revenge, Jessa's seduction of her ex to prove a point.
Kinda rude and immature, yes. Maybe we wouldn't all take it that far but this felt real because let's be honest, for the same reason we want to pull out the revenge boobs, we all secretly want to prove we're unsmoteable. I don't always understand Jessa's motivations, but this one? I get it.
"Huh..."
5. The Marnie/Charlie breakup aftermath.
Charlie loves Marnie, but Marnie can barely stand him. She dumps him. So it shouldn't make sense that he promptly finds another serious girlfriend while she spirals out into a deep, sweatpants-and-greasy-hair depression while sobbing to "Skyscraper" and looking at their Facebook selfies. But yet, it does.
6. Hannah's college ex-boyfriend and his "news".
Upon our first meeting of Elijah, it seemed kind of shocking that Hannah wouldn't have known he was gay back in the day (although his "fruity little voice" and scarf affinity are apparently new), but as the saying goes, hindsight is 20/20. In fact, I have a friend with not one, but two now-gay ex-boyfriends. It happens. Hannah took it personally, cried for a second, then promptly got over it and invited Elijah to be her new roomie.
7. Shoshanna's virginal rejection.
Ugh, that guy's irrational fear that bleeding would make her clingy was obnoxiously real for a 20s-something jerkwad like that dude turned out to be. However, I found it kind of questionable that any guy would say no to Shosh in that seriously uplifting lingerie set she was rocking, V-card or not.
8. Jessa and Marnie's night with Thomas-John.
When even Jessa knows a guy is bad news (a smart instinct of hers, until a few episodes later)...let's just say I was surprised Marnie was seriously into going to his place and making out with her friend in front of him. I know she was trying to let loose, but yuck. His inevitable anger when they wouldn't commit to a threesome was a little (hilariously) over the top, but he had a point about Jessa's bowler hat.
"Seriously, WTF?!?"
9. Marnie's pick up line.
You know the one. What's more shocking: the fact that he actually said it, the fact that she didn't slap him, or the fact that uptight Marnie was so turned on she had to go take care of some business in the bathroom? Maybe the rest of us would have run the other way from Pretentious Art Guy, but Marnie was that desperately in need of some heat.
10. Shoshanna. Ray. Pantless crack run.
It's not advised as a way to get men's attention, but somehow, by running through the streets of Bushwick in her underwear and giving him a non-sexual massage after accidentally smoking crack, Shoshanna stole Ray's heart. And as weird as that sounds, she stole ours too.
11. Jessa's wedding.
To be fair, I think from Jessa?s first completely sheer outfit at her nanny job, we all knew nothing she did would be expected. But my jaw actually dropped when I realized her secret party was a wedding between her exquisite cartilage and her mashup loving husband, Thomas-John.
12. Hannah and Adam?s sex life.
All of it. The weird Girl Scout dirty talk, the misdirected sexts, the time he masturbates while she watches and takes his $100 bill. I mean, sure, the early 20s are a time of sexual exploration for a lot of people, but I think it?s safe to say most of you are just like?experimenting with vibrators or reading 50 Shades of Grey. Hey, to each their own, but on a related note, I checked the official records, and it?s true: no boyfriend has ever willingly provided these pajamas for his new girlfriend:
As much as they confound me, their relationship is one of my favorite things ever on television.
I can't wait to see the dates, tears, and HPV tests waiting for us in Season 2!
Which Girls moments were most memorable for you? One of these or another one altogether? Are you excited for the premiere tonight?
