KOLKATA: Trinamool MP Saugata Roy on Saturday requested the Mamata Banerjee government not to sanction industrial land for housing projects. Roy is currently working on a new industrial policy and will submit it to the chief minister by this month.

Speaking at ?Bengal Builds? on the Milan Mela grounds, he said: ?I have suggested that the West Bengal government issue instructions not to sanction housing projects on industrial land. It is my humble request to the government.? He has also written to Mamata Banerjee on the issue.

It was noticed in some places that land earmarked for industrial purpose has been utilized for setting up housing projects. ?There is no dearth of land in the state. The West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) has about 2,000 acre of land. It has to be distributed,? Roy said, adding that there are certain areas where the land has not been properly demarcated and identified.

Roy was appointed advisor to the state industry and IT departments after he resigned from his post as Union minister of state for urban development. He said that he has also written to industrialists seeking their opinions on how more industrialization can take place given the government?s hands-off policy and decision to allow no more SEZ in the state.

?I will hand over the industrial policy that we are preparing to the chief minister soon,? he said. The MP said due to some reasons the Centre is yet to announce the commencement of the second phase of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme that was supposed to commence from April.

?We will have to make sure that all ongoing JNNURM projects are completed before 2014, otherwise there will be cost escalation,? he said.

This apart, he stressed on the need to develop urban transport, specially public transport, and said the 1,200 odd new buses that the state government had got under the JNNURM scheme were not being run properly.

State urban development minister Firhad Hakim said that a UK-based company ? Modulex Modular Buildings Private Limited ? that constructs new technology fabricated housing complexes had recently visited the city and is looking for a 40 acre land off Kalyani highway. ?They have expressed interest to set up their factory unit. They will have to buy the land,? the minister said.

The day also saw state PWD and environment minister Sudarshan Ghosh Dastidar speaking on the need to sustain the environment as urbanization will take place. There were other speakers who, too, spoke on the need for sustainable housing.
